We Are Not Alone - General Safety Training and Workshop for Artists by Artists at Risk Connection(ARC)
Artists and cultural practitioners play a huge role in shaping the socio-political discourse of their countries, often being at the forefront of community and social justice movements. In this manner, artists are cultural rights defenders – advocates of human rights and the right to free expression. It is for this reason that artistic expression is often deliberately targeted by authoritarian regimes that wish to restrict expression by way of force. Amid growing fears of censorship and persecution in Asia, many artists, practitioners, and curators find themselves faced with the question of how to safeguard themselves and their creative practices during such critical times. This workshop seeks to address this concern, and facilitate a safe space where artists and practitioners may share their anecdotal experiences, with a view to discuss and develop strategies to safeguard artists and artistic freedom. Performative Mechanisms

“Touch turns into sound, sound into movement, movement into language.” This workshop was developed from the artist's process of ‘Performative Mechanisms’, focusing on the reaction, rather than the action, developing the skills required to perform them in the fullest way, skills such as deep listening that involves the entire body; the ability to react and be fully receptive in a live moment; being sincere, exposed and fragile, without imposing impulses and pre-decided actions; sharpening the alertness and fullness of the senses. This workshop was found relevant by a large variety of audiences: dancers, musicians, actors, opera singers, fine art students, non-professionals, people dealing with Parkinson’s disease. Masterclass by A Notional History Team (Mark Teh, Fahmi Reza, Faiq Syazwan Kuhiri, Rahmah Pauzi)
This 2-hour masterclass will take participants behind the scenes of Five Arts Centre's documentary performance 'A Notional History' - encompassing the processes of research, creation, and collaboration. In this session, the performers, designers and director of ANH will share their ways of working collectively and poly-perspectively. The team will elaborate on how they work with official and archival documents, found materials, and video footage, while frictioning these with their own experiences and subjectivities.
