Papermoon Puppet Theatre
Papermoon Puppet Theatre was founded as a brainchild of Maria Tri Sulistyani (an illustrator, writer, and former theatre performer) and Iwan Effendi (a visual artist). Since 2006, this couple has been doing lots of experiments on the arts of puppetry. Papermoon is based in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, a country with world-renowned puppetry traditions. Today, the young expert artists of Papermoon—Anton Fajri, Beni Sanjaya, and Pambo Priyojati—are extending the form with their mixed-media productions and creating works that imaginatively explore identity and society, from live performances on stage, site specific performances to screen performances.
A Bucket Of Beetles is a cinematic puppet performance that was produced by Papermoon Puppet Theatre. Doing experimentations in puppetry is the key for Papermoon’s team on making new productions. Apart from making performances, Papermoon also does workshops, creates visual art projects, hosts artist residency programs, and in 2008 initiated an international biennial puppet festival called PESTA BONEKA.
Making work means making connections with others. That’s why Papermoon keeps doing whatever they can in this situation: to be connected with others.

A non-verbal cinematic puppet performance, A Bucket of Beetles is Papermoon Puppet Theatre's first virtual production. The play is based on a story told by a five-year-old boy. All designs of the animal puppets in the play were taken from his drawings. "A Bucket of Beetles" tells the story of a little boy named Wehea who lives in the rainforest and is friends with all the smallest beings living there. One day, Wehea sees a very special beetle. He then embarks on an adventure to finally meet the beetle—the very special rhinoceros beetle who always searches for the lights and turns out to save his life.
